Global steel production fell by 1.3% y/y in July

Steel production in 70 producing countries amounted to 150.1 million tons for the month

Global steel production in July 2025 fell by 1.3% compared to the same month in 2024, to 150.1 million tons. Compared to the previous month, the figure decreased by 0.8%. This is evidenced by the global ranking of steel-producing countries (70) by the World Steel Association.

Total steel production in the CIS countries + Ukraine decreased by 5.1% y/y for the month and remained at the June level of 6.7 million tons, in particular in Ukraine, it decreased by 18.1% y/y and 6.6% m/m, to 580.5 thousand tons.

According to World Steel, the top ten steel-producing countries in July were:

  • China – 79.7 million tons (-4% y/y);
  • India – 14 million tons (+14%);
  • USA – 7.1 million tons (+4.8%);
  • Japan – 6.9 million tons (-2.5%);
  • Russia – 5.7 million tons (-2.4%);
  • South Korea – 5.3 million tons (-4.7%);
  • Turkey – 3.2 million tons (+4.2%);
  • Brazil – 2.9 million tons (-5.5%).
  • Germany – 2.7 million tons (-13.7%);
  • Iran – 2.2 million tons (+29.7%).

In January-July, global steel production decreased by 1.9% y-o-y to 1.086 billion tons. In the CIS+Ukraine region, the figure decreased by 4.8% y-o-y – to 48.6 million tons. Ukraine produced 4.27 million tons of steel in seven months, down 7% y-o-y.

As GMK Center reported earlier, global steel production decreased by 0.9% in 2024 compared to 2023, to 1.839 billion tons. In December 2024, the figure was 144.5 million tons, which is 5.6% more than in December 2023 and 1.6% less than in the previous month.

Ukraine produced 7.57 million tons of steel last year, which is 21.6% more than in 2023. In December, production volumes amounted to 547,000 tons (+5.1% y/y; +1.1% m/m).
